Nice last statement. The problem with the church in the West (Western civilization) is that it cannot adapt because of the structure. We're "unchanging" our way right out the door into extinction. But if we start with Jesus and his mission to make disciples, and we do it within the culture of those we're reaching, then the church that springs forth will be culturally relevant. That's what the smart dudes refer to as "contextualization." At the beach this week, ever time I went into a bar, a brewery (which, by the way, I'm surprised you didn't go to the Outer Banks Brewing Station on your anniversary--it's awesome... although they were out of their house-brewed root beer), or a coffee shop, I saw some great "soil" for planting "gospel seed." That's why I think it's no coincidence that J.E.'s revealing that he's a frequent customer of Finnigan's Cove. That would be a great place for a "pub church" to spring forth.

This is a very hard question for me to answer. I'm not saying that I'm perfect, however I am luckily culturally relevent by default. I never wore the chrisian t shirts, I still love heavy metal and I don't mind movies with profanity and stuff like that as long as kids aren't around. However, I have noticed that I don't like any of the newer metal coming out. In other words, there are certain things that I'm doing that a said I'd never do. That's where the struggle lies to be culturally relevent. I mean, dosen't everbody think that their generation was the best. I think Generation X was the best becuase that was my prime. Grunge rocks. Right now it's somebody elses prime. We need to try and embrace that. It's not a fight about who's better or who does it the right way. It's a fight to get them on our side. Satan pulls hard sometimes. Cultural irelevance is one way he does that. If churches can't adapt and evolve, they won't stay churches for long.

I just read about a church that's starting in September (I know both of the planters), and the article showed the lead guy saying that his church was going to be for unchurched people, but that their music would be a lot like what was played on a local Christian radio station. I know we do some of that stuff at our Network Celebrations, but we also do a TON of secular tunes with spiritual meaning. But to publicly state that your church will sound like Christian radio and yet be for unchurched people... there seems to be a HUGE disconnect there.

That, and this principle completly vindicates us for all of the TV we watch :-)

Makes sense. Why do unchurched people want to listen or watch church crap when they don't have to. I think something really important is that when we listen to secular music and watch movies that aren't "christian" movies people see that you can go to church and be a disciple without having to cut out alot of cool stuff. I mean, I love church and I'm constantly trying to put God in front of everything in my life, but God dosen't care if I listen to Alice in Chains. If he did, maybe Alice and Chains would suck and Christian music would be awesome. Hehe.

I agree with that. It's all about setting an example. If we're suppossed to be mature christians, than those who don't know or those who are baby christian's are suppossed to learn from us. Oh yea, the yankees suck.

I think you guys pretty much have it. It helps that you know the people you invited to start the church. Maybe if we think like people who those people will invite--people we don't know personally.

I think that we do a pretty good job over here to make people try to feel like guests. Heather puts out food and there are drinks if anybody wants them. I'm not one to play on the radio, or even listen to that much the christian music so I don't suppose that they are uncomfortable there. As far as dress, if we lacked a dress code any more, we'd all be naked so I think we're good there. I'm not really sure. If there is anything you think I could do get back to me.

"I think that to be a church planter, you just need to be down to earth and accept these fears."

Nicely put. We need to stay away from ignoring or denying what those fears are and just accept that people have them, anticipate them, and do what we can to put people at ease.

I definately agree with that. I mean you, don't wanna turn people off of church because other people are drinking. Likewise, if no one cares and there is a limit that's cool too. Plus, I'm not trying to drive a bunch of people home. That would just suck. We might be talking about different parties too. I think that alchohol is okay to an extent and the gauging interest parties ( my birthday, heather's birthday) but in my opinion, once you know who's interested and you gather for that first time to try to start the church, I think that abstaining from alchohol works better. Put out some food and some soda's and you're good to go. That's how I roll.

I know that coming to church was pretty nerve racking for me the first few times. These people have a lot to worry about. They're worried that they'll have to go up in front of everybody, that they won't know how to properly do the rituals, that people will stare at them, and most importantly they're worried because it's church. This is why people who are thinking about attending church come up with excuses. They want to check it out but they're scared. If you're nervous about something and you don't have to do it, alot of times you won't. I think that to be a church planter, you just need to be down to earth and accept these fears. I tell people that I was nervous at first too. The reason that we need to calm people down is to overcome the obstacle of getting them into church. Once they're there, they need to feel somewhat comfortable because fear can cause a person to miss the message. They need to be comfortable enough to focus on what's going on around them instead of when it's going to end.
